SIMCom Announces 5G Module SIM8202G-M2

By Ken Briodagh

According to a recent announcement, SIMCom has launched a 5G module, the SIM8202G-M2, with a new 4-antenna design.

SIMCom said in the release that the module is designed as a small-size multi-band 5G module that supports NSA/SA networking and covers the frequency bands of major network carriers around the world. It reportedly uses the standard M2 interface and its AT command set is compatible with SIM7912G / SIM8200X-M2 modules.

Key features, as outlined in the release:

New 4-antenna design: SIM8202G-M2 adopts a new 4-antenna design to increase communication capacity, send and receive data in an active manner, and maintain high data speed and stability.

Small size: The size of SIM8202G-M2 is 30x42mm. The increase in internal components leads to a denser component layout, causing limited power line routing width, harder isolation and protection of the high-rate signal line, RF-sensitive line, clock signal and harder controlled impedance routing. Therefore, components with smaller package dimensions, higher performance and more reliable quality were used to meet the multi-band/high-performance/high-bandwidth/multi-system requirements of 5G modules.

Exposed copper area: The transmission rate of 5G modules increases power consumption and generates more heat in modules. To ensure the module can work stably, the design includes holes to base for the main heating components and a large exposed copper area to facilitate the heat dissipation of the module by silica gel.
